One view of an ancestor's cottage - now over 400 years old
Sometimes during the course of researching your family, you discover that your ancestors lived in one home for quite a number of years. Sometimes, it is discovered that one or two of their neighbours are actually family members too. Then you wonder what their homes were like. Were there ten or more people living in two rooms? Were there two people rattling around like peas in a huge mansion? Was it a cottage, an apartment, a house or even a barn? Were your ancestors tradesmen or retailers and if so, did they "live over the shop"? How old is that property? Is it less than 100 years old or more than 200 years old? Who lived there before your ancestors? Is the property still there today? What was it like then and what is it like now? w v u v w

An ancestor lived in this pub in the mid-1800s - (Photo dated at the beginning of the 1900s)
All these questions prompt considerable interest in just one property that your ancestors lived in at any one time and delving into House History is now almost as popular as delving into Family History. If it is old enough, one can trace the history of a house through many different types of records. w v u v w
